I find that props and materials with a spooky, well-weathered look actually tend to create the most atmosphere in a home haunt. Luckily, these gently (or not so gently) used items can often be found for a song if you keep a watch on Craigslist and/or your local classified ads.  I just scored this fantastic vintage chest for $20 on Craigslist this weekend.

The closer we get to Halloween, the more competition for these great finds will pick up, so check regularly and act quickly!  There are also a few apps out there that will send you an alert when a listing matching your search criteria is posted to help you get the drop on your home haunting competition.
