Darlings, Halloween might technically have come and gone for the year, but that doesn’t mean we’re going anywhere here at The Year of Halloween. Not with another 364 days of oddities, macabre history and holidays, and general horror geekery to count down! In fact, today celebrates Día de los Muertos, a holiday originating in Mexico to honor the dead. Festivities include creation of altars, family gatherings, visiting and maintaining cemeteries, and in some communities, boisterous parades and costume contests featuring calaveras and calacas (skulls and skeletons), well-loved symbols of the celebration.
As this holiday has spread around the world, a short online search can turn up public Day of the Dead events in your town – a fascinating and fun weekend event for those of you who aren’t quite ready to be done with Halloween. In the meantime, in honor of today’s skeleton-friendly holiday, tonight’s featured horror short is Rot, a stop-motion animated short film by UK artist Erica Luke. Enjoy!
